Axewomen advance to AUS finals and U SPORTS Championship tournament

SYDNEY, NS - Game one of the second day of the AUS Championships kicked off as the Acadia Axewomen took on the UNB Reds to see who makes the trip to the AUS championship game.

Reds keeper Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, SK) was tested early, blocking a few shots and making a nice diving save. Acadia did a great job defensively making sure UNB did not get the ball. UNB didn't get a shot on goal the whole first half. In the 35th minute Holly Buckler (Halifax, NS) had a great find to first-team AUS All-Star Jenna Boudreau (Halifax, NS) to score the first goal of the game and give the Axewomen a 1-0 lead.

The first half concluded by both teams fighting the strong wind but Acadia held the lead.

Acadia continued their dominance in the second half, smothering UNB as soon as they got the ball not allowing them to set up their offence. The Reds found a way to get a cross on the net but it was disrupted by the Acadia defense and brought back to the Reds zone.

The Axewomen took a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute on a nice cross into the box by Jenna Boudreau and it was tipped into the net by the UNB Reds for an own goal.

In the 70th minute, UNB slid in between the Acadia fullbacks and got a shot on net but keeper Sarah Charnock (Newmarket, ON) made the nice blocking save to keep the shutout alive.

In the 88th minute UNB had another chip shot on net but it was taken down by the wind and easily collected by Charnock.

UNB was unable to score in the last minute giving Acadia the win and a trip to the Championship game on Sunday. The final score was 2-0.

With the semifinal win, the Axewomen will head to Victoria, B.C. after the AUS championship weekend to participate in the U SPORTS Championship hosted by the Victoria Vikes. A second AUS team - winner of the second AUS semifinal will also attend.
