Axewomen fall short in a 2-1 loss to host Dalhousie

HALIFAX, N.S. – The Dalhousie Tigers maintained their undefeated record with a 2-1 win over the Acadia Axewomen Sunday afternoon in Halifax.

Acadia maintained the majority of the possession throughout the first half, but the Tigers were able to capitalize on opportunities when they presented themselves.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Elise Evans (Toronto, Ont.) got on the end of a lovely through ball from Kaitlyn Clarke (Edmonton, Alta.) and beat the Acadia keeper at the far post.

Just 10 minutes later, Dalhousie doubled the score when Alyson Bodner (Edmonton, Alta.) was able to pounce on a loose ball in the box. This time the service in came from a great cross from Evans.

Acadia's pressure finally wore down the Tigers' defence when Madyson Harris (Wolfville, N.S.) was able to slide home Grace Longley's (Bedford, N.S.) free kick late in the first half.

The Axewomen thought they had tied the game in the dying minutes of the first half, only to have it called back for a player being offside.

The second half saw both teams share possession with both defensive lines holding strong. As the minutes ticked on, the Axewomen increased the pressure on the Tigers.

The Tigers made several defensive substitutions to lock down the win. Emily Tooth (Markham, Ont.) got her second win of the season, backstopping Dalhousie with five saves.

For her go-ahead goal, Dalhousie's Bodner was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The next game for the Axewomen is Thursday, October 6 at 5 pm when they host the UPEI Panthers. The Tigers are back at Wickwire Field on Friday, October 7 when they host l'Universite de Moncton at 5 pm.
