ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The Acadia Axewomen fell 1-0 to the STFX X-Women on Friday evening in a tightly contested match at STFX Stadium, kicking off the host team's Homecoming 2024 celebrations.
STFX struck early, with Caitlin Crichton (Ottawa, Ont.) netting the game's lone goal just four minutes in, capitalizing on a corner from Meghan Lineger (Comox, B.C.).
Acadia pushed for an equalizer throughout the match. Midfielder Rachel Kibble (Dartmouth, N.S.) sent a pair of shots high in the first half, while forward Riley Bonadie (Ottawa, Ont.) hit the crossbar in the 50th minute.
The physical match saw four yellow cards handed out—three to STFX and one to Acadia. Despite sustained pressure late in the game, the Axewomen were unable to break through, with STFX goalkeeper Christina Gentile (Laval, Que.) making key saves to preserve the shutout.
Acadia's goalkeeper Milena Ramirez (Wolfville, N.S.) made four saves, including a crucial stop in the final minutes on a STFX free kick.
With the loss, Acadia drops to 5-3-2 on the season, sitting three points ahead of STFX, who improved to 4-3-2. Midfielder Madyson Harris (Port Hardy, B.C.) was named Acadia's player of the game.
The Axewomen return to action Sunday, October 6, when they face the Cape Breton Capers in Sydney at 1 p.m.
