Volleyball Axewomen lose tight five set match vs MUN

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - A weekend sweep of Acadia by the Memorial Sea-Hawks in women's volleyball was capped by a five set match victory. The Axewomen drop to 2-4 with two losses to the Sea-Hawks, while Memorial improves to 3-5.

Grabbing the first set 25-21, Acadia never lost the lead in the first game win. Leading as much as 19-11, Acadia was led by rookie Fiona McGuinty who had early two service aces and two kills and veteran Kristen Bolduc with five kills in the opening set.

The Sea-Hawks regrouped and tied the match at one with second set victory. Tied at 15, Memorial pulled together two kills and two blocks to pull away 19-16. The lead would not be surrendered for the 25-19 win.

With a third game 25-22 win, Memorial carried the momentum into the fourth set, pulling out to an early 4-0 advantage, but Acadia clawed back and tied the game at seven and gained a lead that would be tied five times by the Sea-Hawks before eventually giving Acadia a 25-23 win.

Forcing the matching into a fifth and final set, the Axewomen trailed Memorial 8-2 at the technical break. Not giving up, Acadia closed the gap to a 13-12 before conceiting to a 15-13 win by the Sea-Hawks.

Memorial's Samantha March posted a team high 13 kills along with teammate Angela Peddle's 11 kills for the win. Fifth year Axewomen middle, Kristen Bolduc, had 18 kills and an impressive hitting percentage of 0.282, while rookie Sarah Ross added 14.

The Axewomen head to the Universite de Laval for annual RSEQ-AUS interlock matches. Acadia plays Sherbrooke, McGill, Montreal and Laval over a three day period.
