Weekend split with loss to UNB and win over Moncton has Axewomen at 500

MONCTON, N.B. - The Axewomen volleyball team remain at .500 with a weekend split, losing to UNB and capturing their second win in four matches, this time against the always-athletic Universite de Moncton.

The first road trip of the 2013-14 season began at UNB, resulting in a 3-0 loss to the Varsity Reds. Three weeks prior the Axewomen defeated UNB in exhibition in three games. This time around, when it counted, the Axewomen fell in three straight.

Losing three games, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-10 to UNB, Head Coach Michelle would was not happy with the mental effort. "We didn't excute the game plan. It was upsetting to that blocking and defensive training from the week did not transpire in the match".

Rookie sensation Sarah Ross had 8 kills, a block and two aces, while veteran middle Kristen Bolduc nailed six kills, five blocks, and one ace. Hillary Monette had 10 digs.

In Moncton, the Axewomen bounced back from the previous day's loss to UNB with a hard fought 3-2 win over the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues. Always difficult to recover on a first of two game road trip loss, Acadia showed their grit and determination to come home with a win.

Tied at one after two sets, the Axewomen handed Moncton a 25-18 loss in the third set, but Moncton didn't fold, pulling off a convincing 25-11 win to tie the match at two.

The fifth and deciding set was a lopsided victory as Acadia jumped to an early lead and held the Aigles Bleus to only five points in the Axewomen's 15-5 win.

AUS All-Star Meg Rector had an eleven kills performance, adding two blocks, four aces and 12 digs. Kristen Bolduc posted 10 kills, three blocks and one ace, while Sarah Ross landed eight kills, served two aces and defended with 15 digs.

Second year Axewoman Amelia Grail had nine kills, two blocks, two service aces and 10 digs.

"The team played with a powerful, confident energy. Athlete's were sharing specific information about the opponent, allowing them to adapt through out the match", pointed out head coach Michelle Wood. |Multiple players contributed to our points earned, with Hillary Monette once again being a leader and the glue holding our team together with her aggressive defense and strong serve receive".
