SYDNEY, N.S. - The Axewomen volleyball team opened the new year with a convincing 3-0 win over the Cape Breton Capers.

Acadia opened up the match with a 25-18 set win, posting 8 kills and only six errors while the Capers landed 9 kills and 12 erros for a -0.111 efficiency.

The Axewomen took a 2-0 lead following a 25-19 set win which was highlighted by 14 kills.

Edging the Capers 25-23 in the third and last set, the win improved the Axewomen to 3-8 and fifth in the AUS standings while the Capers remain winless after 10 matches.

First year outside hitter Sarah Ross led the Axewomen with eight kills and three service aces, while teammate Meg Rector recorded a hitting percentage of 0.235 that included six kills. Rector and Hillary Monette combined for 32 digs, 17 of which were accounted for by Rector.

Chantelle Zawila led the Capers with 12 kills and also added 10 digs.

Head Coach Michelle Wood was pleased with not only the win but the process in which the game was won. "We have spent a lot of time focusing on our side out percentage in exhibition and training. It was nice to see results today with our strong serve receive players executing first with the pass and then finishing the ball".

Wood concluded, "We really emphasize individual accountability to contribute toward our success and from an offensive stand point we did that".

The Axewomen host the Capers for the second and final meeting this coming Sunday starting at 2:00 pm.
