Axewomen fall short in final game of regular season

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The final home game of the regular season saw the 4-10 Acadia Axewomen facing off against the 5-9 UNB Varsity Reds. Acadia fell four sets to one in the loss.

In the first set, UNB took a 4-3 lead off a service error from Tessa Bulmer and did not look back winning the first set 25-18. Graduating middle Kristen Bolduc, who was honoured for her accomplishments at the start of the game, had four kills in the first set for the Axewomen and 11 on the night.

The Varsity Reds took the lead again to start the second game, but first year outside hitter Sarah Ross had a service ace that pushed an Acadia run which saw the Axewomen take a three point lead and eventually claiming a 25-13 second set victory.

Tied at one set a piece, it was all Acadia in the third set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before a serving error by Jasmin Logue-Prest led to UNB's first point of the set. Excellent blocking by Acadia's frontcourt stretched the lead to eight, 10-2. The Varsity Reds closed to within one 15-14 by going on a 9-3 run.

Tessa Bulmer responded with a kill to keep Acadia's advantage, but UNB took their first lead of the set, 21-20, on a block assist by Celina Abba and Taylor Hutchison. With the third set tied 24 apiece, it was a kill by Jacqueline Sebetovsk that gave the Reds a 25-24. A block by Sebetovsk and Rebecca Glancy ended the set with the Varsity Reds coming back to win 26-24.

In the fourth set both teams battled back and forth until UNB jumped out to a 13-7 lead. A kill by Celina Abba put UNB up 24-15 and a final kill by Vanja Mitrovic claimed the game and match for the Varsity Reds.

Rebecca Glancy was the Subway Player of the Game for the Varsity Reds in the win with nine kills, two digs and two block assists. Graduating Acadia senior Kristen Bolduc posted 11 kills, two assists, four digs and four block assists and was named the Acadia Subway Player of the Game.
