First place Huskies edge Axewomen for 3-2 win

WOLFVILLE N.S. The Acadia Axewomen hosted the first place St Mary's Huskies (11-4) on Sunday afternoon at War Memorial Gymnasium. The Axewomen would force a fifth set to decide the game with the Huskies claiming the advantage early in the set and an eventual 15-8 win and defeating Acadia 3-2. For the second time this season, the matchup between both teams went to five sets.

The Axewomen came out strong with 12 kills in the first set and won the game 25-17, earning six of the last seven points in the set.

With Acadia holding a 1-0 edge over the Huskies, Saint Mary's came out strong to begin the second set holding a 9-2 lead. The Axewomen would answer back and tie the game 12 apiece. The match would remain close, but the Huskies would prevail 25-23 on a kill by Rachel Windhorst to end the set.

The third set was crucial with both teams trying to gain ground. Saint Mary's would eventually win the set 25-17 behind 10 kills and nine Acadia errors. The Axewomen would not give up during their final home game and bounced back in the fourth set with a convincing 25-13 win. Acadia forced 12 Saint Mary's errors in the fourth game.

The match would be decided in the fifth and final set where the Huskies provided 12 kills to win the set 15-8 and edge the Axewomen with a 3-2 victory.

Subway Player of the Game for the Huskies, Tessa Michaels, played aggressive and finished with 14 digs in the win. Elly Prince added 40 assists and 12 digs while Windhorst contributed 19 kills and 11 digs.

In the loss, Subway Player of the Game Marissa Chin had four kills, four service aces and seven digs in the loss. Graduating libero Hilary Monette had 24 digs in her final home game as an Axewoman. Jazmin Prest had a strong match with 13 kills for Acadia.

Acadia will next travel to Memorial this weekend to wrap up the regular season. Saint Mary's wraps up their season this Thursday at home versus Dalhousie.
