Axewomen squeak past Aigles Bleus

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen volleyball team improve to 7-8 and sit in second place in the AUS standings after defeating Moncton Aigles Bleus 3-2.

Out to a 20-12 lead in the first set, the Axewomen allowed a determined Aigles Blues to work their way back t0 23-19 before giving up the set 25-19.

The second set was much of the same as Acadia pushed out to an early 7-3 lead before Moncton tied the game at 14. The Aigles Bleus pushed out to a 18-15 lead and never looked back as they squeezed out a 27-25 win and tying the match at one.

For the first time the Aigles Bleus sprung out to an early lead, dominating play at 14-7. The Axewomen struggled to close the gap and fell behind 2-1 in the match after a 25-17 game three loss.

Pushing out to a 12-6 lead, the Axewomen reversed their fortunes on the great outside hitting of the match's Subway Player of the Game Sarah Ross (Toronto, Ont.)\. Tying the match at two after a dominant 25-11 fourth set victory, Acadia continued the momentum gained by the fourth set and after tying the game at 5 in the fifth, the Axewomen held onto the lead and closed the final frame 15-12.

Moncton's Alyssa Turenne (LaBroquerie, N.B.) was named the Aigles Bleus' Player of the Game with eight kills. Teammate Rachelle Lemoine (Winnipeg, Man.) led Moncton with 13 kills and a 0.429 hitting percentage, while Christelle Bertin (Beresford, N.B.) trailed Lemoine with 10.

Sarah Ross led the Axewomen with 23 kills and teammate Lauryn Renzella (Stouffville, Ont.) posted 15. Olivia Boudreault (Hammonds Plains, N.S.) and Hillary Monette (New Minas, N.S.) were solid once again with great sets and digs respectively.

"Moving forward we need to play a more complete match. I'm thankful our group is able to compartmentalize each set when this doesn't happen", commented Acadia head coach Michelle Wood.

Wood added, "We went away from our tough serving after set one, which made it challenging on our blockers, but again we were able to reset in set 4 serving tough and shutting down their middles. Overall our efficiency on transition off defense was the highest it's been all year, so we're pleased with that."

The Axewomen will host the Saint Mary's Huskies next Sunday at 2:00 p.m. while Moncton will have next weekend off and then host Saint Mary's and Dalhousie the weekend of February 14-15.
