Athletes of the Week: Acadia's Collombin, Mount Royal's Yaremko honoured

TORONTO– Taylor Collombin of the Acadia Axewomen and Nolan Yaremko from the Mount Royal Cougars are the U SPORTS Athletes of the Week for the period ending February 27th, 2022.

Taylor Collombin, Acadia

The Axewomen took over first place in the AUS women's volleyball standings after battling for two five-set wins on the weekend. Leading the charge for Acadia was senior outside hitter Taylor Collombin.

A science student from Victoria, British Columbia, Collombin was named Player of the Game in Friday's win against the Dalhousie Tigers, posting a game-leading 25 kills (.344 efficiency), along with 21 digs, 2 solo blocks and a total 27 points.

Collombin followed Friday's performance with another 27-point match, contributing 22 kills (.386 efficiency), 3 service aces and 10 digs to Acadia's win over the Saint Mary's Huskies. Collombin leads the AUS in total kills (217) and kills per set (4.34)—the second-most in the country—and is fourth in both digs and solo blocks.

Nolan Yaremko, Mount Royal

Mount Royal's Nolan Yaremko put up four key points in the most important two games his Cougars have faced this season. In the team's quarterfinal match-up with the Regina Cougars, every goal mattered as MRU took the first game 4-3 and the second game in overtime.

Yaremko played hero in the series-clinching overtime frame, wasting no time in grabbing a deflected puck in front of the net and burying it to punch his team's ticket to the CW semi-finals.

Yaremko's game awareness and quick hands were on display all weekend, as the second-year forward contributed on more than half the Cougars' goals.

He posted a highlight reel one himself in the first period of Friday's game, picking up the puck at his own blue line and speeding through three defenders before tucking it between the goalie's pads.

The Spirit River, AB product hasn't missed a beat since the regular season, where he finished as the conference's top goal scorer and point getter with 19 and 39 respectively.
