Helmig and Peach named Acadia athletes of the week
Bianca Helmig of the women’s basketball team and Bailey Peach of the men’s hockey team have been named the Acadia athletes of the week for the period ending February 16.
Helmig, a third-year guard from Speyer, Germany, played a crucial role in the Axewomen’s sweep of the No. 2 nationally ranked and previously undefeated Saint Mary’s Huskies. In Friday’s 86-56 road victory, she scored 23 points on an incredible 83% shooting (10-for-12) while adding 11 assists for her first double-double of the season, along with four steals. She followed that up with another stellar performance in Saturday’s 81-76 overtime win in Wolfville, leading the team with 28 points on 47.1% shooting, while contributing five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Peach, a third-year forward from Falmouth, NS, delivered a dominant performance in the Axemen’s 9-4 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night. He recorded a hat-trick, powering Acadia’s offense and playing a key role in securing the win as the team wrapped up its regular season.
Both Helmig and Peach were instrumental in their teams' success this week as they continue to build momentum heading into the postseason.
The Acadia athletes of the week are presented by McDonald’s.
