Noseworthy-Smith nails game winner with a "Beckham Bend"

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - Cochrane Noseworthy Smith scored the lone goal for the Axemen and Andrew MacRae recorded the shutout as the Acadia men's soccer team grabbed a 1-0 win in their season opening AUS matchup against the UPEI Panthers.

Despite several great opportunities for both teams, including Panther Cole MacMillan hitting the crossbar on a near goal, the Axemen prevailed.

The Axemen also had many opportunities throughout the first half, working off corner kicks and pushing the pace but the game remained scoreless at the intermission.

Ten minutes into the second half, third year fourth year midfielder Cochrane Noseworthy-Smith was granted a kick just outside the 18 yard box after he was pushed from behind by the defending Panther player.

Noseworthy-Smith sent the ball sailing with a "Beckhan bend" into the furthermost corner of the net, past Keeper Brett MacDonald's fingers, giving Acadia the 1-0 advantage which they would hold onto until the final whistle.

Findlay MacRae, head coach of the Axemen sqaud pointed out on Twitter following the game, "I am pleased with the win tonight but we now must focus on the next game. The good news is that we can play better..."

Noseworthy –Smith was named the Subway Player of the Game for Acadia and Logan Dawson took the award for the Panthers.

Acadia heads to Halifax to face Dalhousie while UPEI goes home to play Universite de Moncton on Sunday afternoon.
