Axewomen sole possession of 2nd place with 2-1 win vs MUN

WOLFVILLE N.S. - A late morning matchup between the 2-0-3 Acadia Axewomen and the 2-2-0 Memorial Sea-Hawks on Raymond field resulted in a 2-1 Acadia win over the visiting Sea-Hawks. With the win, Acadia will claim sole possession of second place in the AUS standings and one point behind the league leading UNB Varsity Reds.

Both teams came out aggressive, but Acadia held the advantage throughout most of the opening half. Twenty minutes into the match, third year hometown product Kinsella Noseworthy-Smith broke free from her defender and fired a shot from 35 feet away that would slip past second year keeper Jaime Crocker's fingers, putting the Axewomen up 1-0.

Acadia was on the move again with 11 minutes left in the half as fourth year midfielder Chantelle Cadeau pushed through three defenders sending the ball flying past Crocker and strengthening the Axewomen's lead to 2-0.

Minutes later dual-athlete Katie Ross would ring a shot off the cross bar. Acadia would take a 2-0 lead into halftime

In the second half, the Seahawks were looking to pressure the Axewomen and cut into their deficit. They had many chances off a number of free kicks and corners.

With seconds remaining in the game, second year forward Jesse Noseworthy would spoil Axewomen keeper Caroline Wood's shutout and put the Seahawks on the board.

Despite the push from Memorial, Acadia would come out on top with the final score 2-1 in favour of the Axewomen.

"It was a gutsy and tough performance and that's the type of game we needed and needed to get a result from.  It shows the character of the team. You need a tough and deep squad to handle the physicality and windy conditions, and then you also need discipline as MUN are a good squad", pointed out Acadia head coach Amit Batra. "You have to grind out some games in the season if you want to be successful.  We're looking forward to a rematch with UPEI next weekend who are dangerous and then SMU who gave us a lot of problems last year so we anticipate another tough week coming up."

Second year Acadia fullback Candace Conrad and rookie Sea-Hawk defender Keisha Younge would earn the Subway Players of the Game honors.

Acadia will head to Prince Edward Island to take on the UPEI Panthers next Saturday while Memorial is heading home to face Moncton next Saturday.
