Win over Capers place Axewomen tied in first

SYDNEY, N.S. - The Axewomen soccer team pulled off a tight 1-0 win over the defending AUS champion Cape Breton Capers in Sydney. The win improves Acadia's record to 5-0-5, creating a tie for first place with the UNB Varsity Reds at 20 points.

The scoring drought continues for the Cape, as the defending AUS champion Capers were shutout for the third consecutive game this past Sunday and handed their fourth loss of the season.

After a scoreless first half, second year midfielder Candace Conrad put Acadia in front at the 47-minute mark. It would be the only goal of the contest and would hold up to 43 minutes more of play.

Senior Axewomen keeper, Caroline Wood made 11 saves for Acadia in the win, while Caper Tiffany O'Donnell made 13 saves in a losing cause.

Head Coach Amit Batra was positive about the win following Acadia's Friday tie against StFX where they were unable to capitalize on many scoring opportunities.

"We played with composure and stuck to the game plan", said Batra following the game. "When adjustments and improvisation were required we made them on the field so the decision making and leadership from on and off the field was a calming influence that filtered throughout the team."

Batra pointed out that playing Cape Breton on their own pitch is tough matchup. "Playing CBU is never easy so it's a nice way to enter the break with 3 points.  We see them again in a two weeks and that will be another tough battle that I think both teams always look forward to."

The Axewomen head into the Thanksgiving break with a three point lead over the UPEI Panthers who have a game in hand. Acadia will return to Raymond Field on Friday, October 17 against the 5-3-1 Dalhousie Tigers and then host Cape Breton on Sunday, October 19 before completing the 2014 regular season schedule on the road at Mount Allison on October 24th.
