Axewomen outshoot Reds 16-4 in 1-0 loss

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The UNB Reds evened their opening weekend road trip to 1-1 with a hard fought 1-0 win over the host Axewoman after losing to Dalhousie on Saturday.

Jillian Larose netted the game winner at the 39th minute, giving the Reds a win to celebrate on their trip home to Fredericton.

With a nice feed from teammate Madison Goertz, Larose was alone to send a low corner shot past rookie keeper Melina Ramirez for the lone goal of the match.

The Reds were outshot 16-4 on the stats sheet and Reds' keeper Brynn Nash kept her teammates in the lead with several phenomenal saves, including 12 stops in the second half.

"We just asked for more of the intangible things. More energy, more grit. To be in on the battles a little bit more than we did yesterday. We just wanted more passion out of them. Technically we can do it, we just have to fight for it," noted UNB head coach Jon Crossland at the end of the game.

The Axewomen pushed hard in the second half but Nash was the key to keeping the offensive attack at bay.

"It was frustrating when we have so many shot and we didn't get one in the net. It was a good game on our part since we have most of possession. It was frustrating not to get the finishes. We are not mad at ourselves, we're just frustrated that we didn't win," said team captain and senior defender Lauren Jodrey.

Olivia Rowinski was named the Subway Player of the Game for her effort, while Acadia's Rebecca LeBlanc captured the honours for the losing Axewomen.

The Axewomen are on the road next weekend starting with Mount Allison on Friday evening and at UPEI against the Panthers on Saturday.

UNB returns home to host Cape Breton next Saturday and StFX on Sunday.
