LeBlanc's goal in 85th minute gives Axewomen 2-1 win over UNB

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – A header goal by Rebecca LeBlanc (Sydney, N.S.) in the 85th minute handed the Axewomen a 2-1 win over the visiting UNB REDS in women's soccer.

LeBlanc's goal - her first of the season - came from a Meghan Johnston (Dartmouth, N.S.) corner kick that was pulled down by LeBlanc, deflected by Madyson Harris, and eventually headed by LeBlanc for the game winning goal.

"The first half was a little rough, but we came out harder in the second half.  We had a talk in the locker room (at the half). We needed to play quicker, get open more and move off the ball. We were not moving off the ball as much in the first half, but did so the second half," noted LeBlanc, who was named the Subway Player of the Game.

The REDS opened the game with an early goal at the 22-minute mark. Alexandra Hughes-Goyette (Garibaldi Highlands, B.C.) tapped in a great cross from teammate and sister Aurora Hughes-Goyette (Garibaldi Highlands, B.C.) for the 1-0 lead.

The Axewomen tied the game in the 39th minute when Meghan Johnston sent a nice pass that slipped past a UNB defender, giving Abbey Aucoin (Dartmouth, N.S.) a shot to the lower right corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season. Aucoin sits fourth in AUS scoring race with 8 points (6 goals and 2 assists in 11 games).

Acadia pressured hard in the second half, taking 14 shots of a total of 22 in the last 45 minutes. Brynn Nash (Saskatoon, Sask.) was tested with eight shots on goal. Milena Ramirez (Wolfville, N.S.) was solid with two saves from three shots on net in the opening half.

The Axewomen improve to 8-2-1 and slip into second place in the AUS standings, while the REDS drop to 2-4-4.

Acadia will visit Mount Allison on Friday, Oct. 28 for their final game of the regular season and UNB will have games at STFX and Cape Breton beginning on Thursday, Oct. 27.
